i am not necessarily a fan of the cute girls doing cute things (cgdct) genre, but it usually heavily depends on the content and theme of the show, as quite a number of them are simply showing "hey we just drew a bunch of cute girls because we can" that would get boring after a few episodes in my opinion. plus there is a whole manga magazine dedicated to this genre (manga time kirara), so honestly unless it has a really attractive premise then normally i would skip a cgdct show.

wasteful days of high school girls gives me a refreshed feeling of how i feel about cgdct. i've already heard that this show is basically the female version of the 2012 daily lives of high school boys, as i pretty much enjoyed the former, so maybe i would like wasteful days of high school girls, and probably relate to it as i spent my high school days in an all-girls' school as well. turns out i was right. most importantly, wasteful days of high school girls does not scream cgdct to me, rather it being a slice of life comedy, as it does not really focus on the "cute" aspect.

wasteful days of high school girls, as the title suggests, goes through the "wasteful" daily lives surrounding tanaka "baka" nozomu (cv akasaki chinatsu), kikuchi "wota" akane (cv tomatsu haruka) and saginomiya "robo" shiori (cv toyosaki aki). the 12-episode anime follows the trio as well as their other classmates' high school freshman year, telling you the realest surreal stories of being a student in an all-girls' school.

a lot of people would compare this with the 2018 asobi asobase as both shows take place in an all-girls' high school and a trio group of female students. however, i feel like wasteful days of high school girls is way different from asobi asobase as this focuses more on the "daily life" aspect, while asobi asobase is more of a school club themed anime. asobi asobase tries you fake you with beautifully drawn girls in their promotional materials (including its op) that gives a huge contrast when you actually got into it, but wasteful days of high school girls is just straight up telling the audience that "yea we're gonna do dumb shit in here, take it or leave it", like dude the main character is called "baka", so just expect the dumbest things when you watch this anime.

although it is supposed to be a surreal comedy, i found a lot of realistic aspects depicted in wasteful days of high school girls as well. for example, the chemistry between the girls just perfectly represent the friendship between most friend groups i've been in during my high school life, they never said wholesome things like "omg you look so good! so cute!", rather they're like "lmfao you suck" or just make fun of each other. also there are some very desperate people who wanted to get a bf but turned out they are the ones that are the least attractive towards boys, etc lol.

i would also like to point out that i, as somewhat of a fujoshi myself, very much relate to wota when reading bl doujin works. episode 10 in particular was a very pleasant surprise too, as not only we got to know about the trio's past relations between each other, but we also got bl-esque content (also did the production community pick the vas of both male characters on purpose because we are getting kirito x eugeo content while asuna witnesses it happening beside them????) my face is basically below when watching this bit:

JUST GET MARRIED ALREADY

overall speaking, i am very much satisfied with my watching experience from wasteful days of high school girls, and i would recommend it to anyone who wants some laughter, or anyone who wants to know how girls in an all-girls' school spend their daily lives (this is the most realistic anime representation of it i've seen so far, but of course as an anime it has its exaggerated bits with all the surreal comedy).
