winter 2023 anime
this blog post goes through the list on https://www.livechart.me/winter-2023/all.
introduction
after going through the amazing fall 2022, i.e. battle of all the big anime names in the current anime world, we are going to start 2023 by a full season of ...isekai. there's almost like 70 anime in total set to be aired in january 2023, and there are already 20+ of them are either isekai and/or narou-kei light novel adaptations.
i was following 20+ new anime releases in fall 2022, that when i first looked at winter 2023 i thought i could take a bit of rest, yet after some counting there's still 20 of them that i find interesting? i can't believe in myself lol. btw i'm an anime only, so i usually only judge a work by looking at its pv and/or cast and decide if i want to give it a try. i will also avoid all sorts of spoilers so please pay attention to that as well.
so let's jump into it.
*this list does not count ongoing airing works from fall 2022 or before, only the ones started airing from january 2023 are included.
sequels
vinland saga season 2 (myanimelist / anilist)
the season 1 was so amazing as i 100% didn't expect myself to find myself, an atheist, to sightly understand christianity after watching s1 of vinland saga (lmao?). apart from that, i just love how it does not have any exaggerations or anything gimmicky, just a very strong plot along with amazing storytelling and animation as well. let's hope mappa will carry on this spirit in the next season, as afaik most existing staff in s1 are also gonna be in s2, so i have faith in this that it's gonna be even better.
tokyo revengers: christmas showdown (myanimelist / anilist)
honestly i've heard too many mixed reviews over the s1 of tokyo revengers (as well as the ending of its manga) so i decided to give myself a try on how bad was it like, but turned out it wasn't as bad as i expected? sure the mc doesn't seem like he's 26, and the time-travel setting has quite a lot of loopholes that i can point out, but at least i enjoyed watching the gang fights, so let's just hope that animation doesn't suck in the next season.
bungo stray dogs s4 (myanimelist / anilist)
bsd is one of the seires that i kept procrastinating to start watching for years until lately when i found out that it's gonna release a s4 in january 2023. honestly i'm not the biggest fan of its superpower system, but i am definitely a fan of bones' fight scenes. the characters also attract me in terms of both their looks and personalities (although to be fair they are all pretty ...twisted to start with), but hey i am a simple female, i see hot guys with a voice actor cast this expensive, then i'm totally diving into this rabbit hole.
the vampire dies in no time s2 (myanimelist / anilist)
i am a big fan of gag humour and surreal comedy, especially in anime, that the vampire dies in no time is a total fit for what i would instantly become a fan of. i pretty much enjoyed s1, john is so cute that i want a plushie of it, ronaldo is also handsome af, the chemistry between the characters is amazing, so there's no reason not to follow its sequel release. plus fukuyama jun, being a memeable seiyuu himself (in a good way), voicing the weakest vampire which is already a meme in itself, is the best character-seiyuu combination i would claim in this whole winter season.
tsurune - the linking shot - (myanimelist / anilist)
good ol' kyoani working on another sport series after free! has officially ended. tsurune does give out free! vibes, but it feels more aesthetic comparing to free! and this focuses more on the characters' individual problem within themselves. i am not necessarily a fan of kyoani, but i am a free! fan, that's what got me into tsurune in the first place. s1 of tsurune felt calming to watch that i feel like it is underrated, so let's hope the s2 would gain more attention it deserves. btw uemura yuuto has 3 main roles in this season, so let's hope he would gain more recognition from the amazing voice acting of his in these 3 totally different shows (the other 2 are bsd and vinland saga)
suddenly, egyptian gods 2 (myanimelist / anilist)
this is 100% just a personal favourite, honestly i am only here for the seiyuu cast as 3 of my favourite seiyuus are on it (kaji yuuki, shimono hiro, shimazaki nobunaga), but omfg idk how japan manages to turn everything in the world into cute creatures, even egyptian gods are now cute af in this anime ??? this is gonna be my weekly short and quick source of my healing material by simply screaming "they are so cute nani??222??" for 3 minutes straight. please jump into this train with me so i feel less alone.
new anime
the angel next door spoils me rotten (myanimelist / anilist)
i've heard too many good things about this light novel that i just can't not pay attention to the news that it's getting an anime adaptation. from the synpnosis and its pv, it seems like it's a simple romance story between the male & female mc, but the only thing i am worried about is that it's project no. 9 taking care of the adaptation, which i had already witnessed what they did with my stepmom's daughter is my ex in summer 2022 (i read the light novel after watching the anime and realized how good the source material is...), so honestly i don't have too much hope for this to be attracting fans from its adaptation.
nier: automata ver 1.1a (myanimelist / anilist)
the same case with the angel next door mentioned above, the hype over an anime adaptation of the nier video game is making me curious on why it's so highly expected. i am expecting myself to go through an action sci-fi ride, so let's hope a-1 pictures can keep up its good reputation after proving itself to be making good animation from its numerous works in 2022, but there are already rumours to a possible production delay... so let's not give too much hope to start with i guess.
spy classroom (myanimelist / anilist)
i am pretty much a seiyuu fan, but i mostly pay attention to male seiyuus. despite that, for spy classroom, i am still amazed just by looking at the seiyuu cast, even if i don't pay much attention to female seiyuus. for the anime itself, it seems to be a mix of spy x family and assassination classroom, which i am a fan of both, and given how much it's hyped up, i am sure that it won't disappoint, let's hope that this anime adaptation will be worth this a-list cast list.
campfire cooking in another world with my absurd skill
mappa making an isekai? slightly intrigued. uchida yuuma & maaya being in the same anime? hmmMMM. the food scenes made me feel hungry when watching the pv at 3am? okay fine i will go for 1 isekai in this season. plus idk who tf in muse hong kong decided to put this simulcast at 12am on a fucking monday night, damn the pure evilness in this business decision, but fuck it, guess i will gain more weight due to eating midnight snacks while watching this anime.
endo and kobayashi live! the latest on tsundere villaness lleselotte
the ice guy and his cool female colleague
finally, some urban story with fantasy elements. although i am not necessarily a fan of romcoms, the chemistry between the 2 main characters seems to be pretty interesting. it would be a pretty relaxing watch in the winter season as you know... ice guy *awkward laughter*. plus it's always good to watch some workplace setting anime, as you know there are too many anime set in school, and it's good to take a break from those, especially as an grown working adult.
trigun stampede (myanimelist / anilist)
i heard that it's a remake of trigun, which was an anime back in the 90s or something. the full 3d animation is kinda intriguing to watch only judging by its pv, so let's see what will possibly happen with a 3d (re?) adaptation to an old anime. honestly i don't mind 3d in anime as long as they are used suitably, so let's see what kind of viewing experience will trigun stampede bring me to.
kaina of the great snow sea (myanimelist / anilist)
this feels like a really fitting anime for the winter season as you can see that it is set in a snowy area (lol). only judging from its pv, it kinda gives out made in abyss vibes. as i enjoyed made in abyss quite a lot, maybe i will like this as well. plus we got sawano hiroyuki the goat to be in charge of the music which is a definite plus to the viewing experience, like, just watch the pv then you'll understand.
giant beasts of ars
one thing that i like about watching original anime is that it encourages a lot of discussions and i just enjoy reading people's comments and predictions on how the story will progress in the later episodes. from the premise of this one, it seems to have an interesting setting, and i am expecting to see some plot twists in the later episodes too.
revenger
if i only looked at the title and the cast list, i would assume that this is some kind of goblin slayer rip-off because its about going on a revenge with umehara yuuichirou (lol). to be fair i am not exactly a fan of samurai or ancient settings in general, but hey it's an original, and the pv looks pretty intriguing too, so i might end up liking it? who knows.
mononogatari
boy oh boy, is noragami finally back with another season...? no, there's still no news of a noragami s3, but mononogatari (which has nothing to do with the monogatari series) just reminds me too much of it, in terms of its world building and the fight scenes (at least the ones shown in the pv). some manga readers claim that it's a mix of jujutsu kaisen and noragami, which are some of my all-time favourites, and it supposedly has pretty badass fights too, so let's hope the animation doesn't disappoint. if that's the case, mononogatari might actually be my favourite new anime in this season as well.
buddy daddies
can't get enough of spy x family in 2022? since it's 2023, let's just watch a gay version of it while waiting for its sequel & movie to come out! (lmao) as some have probably mentioned, it seems like p.a. works is trying to change its image from "cute girls in workplaces" to some outright crazy shit, which i am totally down for after akiba maid war from the last season. plus it's an original, so let's see what will happen when it finally airs.
high card
another seemingly interesting premise in an original anime, it kinda reminds me of k and arcana famgilia (as i am watching that lately lol), which is clearly targeted at female audiences given the big cast of male characters. as a simple female, i am totally down for this service.
the fire hunter
the fire hunter seems to be a dystopian story, yet the background art seems like it is set in an ancient/rural setting, and with a mix of fantasy, it is totally something that will attract me. let's hope the main story doesn't suck in this one, if yes, then it will probably be one of my favourites in this season.
conclusion
the original animes this season all seem pretty interesting, which is probably why i still have 20 to watch in total... of course we cannot direcly compare a relatively weak season (winter) to a strong season (fall), but hey at least in this season we are getting some really good sequels and some popular adaptations, and i hope they all do well.
