an introduction

about this blog you can call me tobipa or toby. i started this blog because i found myself writing thoughts after completing an anime on my notes app, then i felt like sharing them on the internet as well. i am from hong kong, i speak chinese, cantonese (native), english and some japanese, and in most cases i watch my anime in chinese subtitles, as well as remembering japanese names in kanji instead of romaji. and no, i do not watch anime dubbed, neither in cantonese nor english. normally, i would only post when i have completed an anime. i also follow seasonal anime releases, so i would also post my predictions, interests and after thoughts for every season as well. feel free to follow me on myanimelist and/or anilist , where i update my anime progress on both sites almost every day. however, i only add anime to my plan to watch list on myanimelist. please also ignore the 80+ entries on that plan to watch list as well, as that's exactly why i made an account lol. me & anime i...

Iroduku: The World in Colors

Image
genre: drama, ensemble cast, romance, urban fantasy number of seasons: 1 season with 13 episodes myanimelist / anilist my family got a temporary amazon prime video subscription for 2 months as they wanted to watch 1 certain show that's only available on there, then i decided to check out if there are anime available on there as well. the subscription has now been terminated, and i ended up completing grandblue and iroduku which i love both shows in totally different ways. (btw i didn't write up a blog post on grandblue was because i was kinda too busy to type up a whole post on why i absolutely loved that shitpost of a show, so anyways just know that i LOVE it) iroduku is one of the many original anime made by the legendary p.a. works, however its reputation, from what i've seen within anime communities, isn't as good as their previous work with a similar theme, nagiasu (aka a lull in the sea, 2013 ), or just other p.a. works original anime in general. some even...

winter 2023 conclusion

Image
for a full list of winter 2023 anime, please go to https://www.livechart.me/winter-2023/all . introduction comparing to what we had last season, this season is clearly lacking a lot, especially it has 20+ isekai/rpg-fantasy works that already scared a lot of people away. in terms of discussions, the ones that were continued from last season seemed to gain more attention than the newly aired ones, such as the eminence in shadow and bluelock . however, there are still some pleasant surprises, and of course, some disappointments. continued from last season the eminence in shadow genre: isekai, op mc, cringe comedy number of episodes: 20 myanimelist / anilist it's official, my favourite anime from this season goes to the eminence in shadow . it has every element a generic isekai would have, an op mc, a group of girls admiring him, uses swords and magic; however what makes it stand out is its story. in the entire story, as the only thing he cares about is just wanting to make himself...

400 completed entries on myanimelist special

Image
myanimelist link: https://myanimelist.net/animelist/lktobyx this isn't really anything worth celebrating,  but i just feel like making a post on my anime watching experience at this milestone. i once counted the number of series's i have watched and the number was around 150 or less (my myanimelist had around 300 completed entries by then), so that probably means the actual number of series's (i.e. counting multiple seasons as one single entry) should be somewhere about 200. and here are some shows that occupied the most number of entries: *title in bold  means it's what i'm going to refer it later on this post - osomatsu-san (3 seasons, 2 movies, 3 specials = 8 entries in total) matsu is always one of my favourites of all time, i just like how chaotic the show and the characters in general are, and ofc the seiyuus being one of the reasons why lol. but it's just kinda sad that it feels like they are just milking the franchise at this poi...

spring 2023 anime

Image
this blog post goes through this list on https://www.livechart.me/spring-2023/ . introduction winter 2023 was... definitely having less popularity than before. there are nearly no new shows that became insanely popular, so let's see what are we having for this upcoming april, which is commonly seen as the "big" season along with fall every year. i will only list out the ones that i find myself interested in viewing. also, attack on titan final season final part 1 will not be included as it is a special episode already aired in march. the following are listed in the order of its premiere date (i am aware that [oshi no ko] has already made its episode 1 premiere in japan cinemas, but i am counting tv premiere in here). sequel/spin-offs edens zero s2 i think i watched a few episodes of fairy tail as a kid when it used to air on tv, and the few things i remember from it was that blue cat (which i didn't even know its name) & the main character. so i found out that t...

Suzume

Image
genre: urban fantasy, drama, probably romance length: 121 minutes ever since the release of suzume , people have been referring to the recent shinkai films ( your name, weathering with you and suzume ) as his "disaster trilogy". to be clear, these 3 films do not relate to each other in any way and are independent stories. it's just mitsuha from your name looks incredibly similar to suzume from suzume that i could not tell them apart at first glance. to be completely honest, the "disaster trilogy" all feel the same to me. when your name was released in cinemas, i even watched twice and i could not comprehend why do people like it so much as i did not understand where it is supposed to be touching. weathering with you just felt like a completed story without any remarkable points to me, and suzume feels the same too. suzume follows our main girl suzume going on a road trip from southern to northern japan in order to close doors that would give out earthquake...

Kakushigoto

Image
main information genre: gag comedy, iyashi-kei, childcare, slice of life season: spring 2020 number of seasons & episodes: 1 season, 12 episodes myanimelist / anilist this post contains spoilers of its ending i love sayounara zetsubou-sensei , and that's how i discovered about kakushigoto as both are created by the same author/mangaka kumeta kouji. i also checked out the ovas of katte ni kaizou , but that was kind of a miss to me, as i was not born in that generation to understand its humour. nevertheless, i decided to give kakushigoto a try as it's a more recent work of kumeta that i would probably enjoy myself more... and also because the main guy is basically a clone of zetsubou-sensei (even the cv is also kamiya hiroshi). kakushigoto goes through a struggling manga author, gotou kakushi (a pun of the show's title, which also means "something to hide" in japanese), whose mangas are known for containing a lot of dirty jokes, hence tries to hide his manga...

Image
this post only discusses the web predecessor to the manga working!! that is set in another restaurant of the same name with another group of characters. the blog post to the main working!! series can be found here . this post also contains spoilers , so please read at your own discretion. main information: genre: comedy, slice of life, workplace (restaurant), romance season: fall 2016 number of seasons & episodes: 1 season, 13 episodes myanimelist / anilist   to the ones who are confused with the titles, www.working!! is based on the initial version of the manga that was published on web, until square enix reached out to the author and asked them to post on their magazine, which later became the main working!! series and got animated first in 2010~2015 with 3 seasons. the web version (i.e. this post) is usually called the cat-group while the magazine version is called the dog-group in order to distinguish the 2 versions of the same manga. both versions don't have any rela...
